THE WORDS OF CHRIST CARRY AUTHORITY
Part Two
THE WORDS OF CHRIST CARRY AUTHORITY
THE CHURCH IS SUBJECT TO CHRIST
" . . . though He were a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him."
(Hebrews 5:8-9)
"For the husband is the head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church, and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything."
(Ephesians 5:23-24)
"But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do the things which I say?"
(Luke 6:46)
" 'Not everyone who says to Me, "Lord, Lord," shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?" And then I will declare to them, "I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!"
" 'Therefore whoever hears these saying of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
" 'But everyone who hears these saying of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.'
"And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes."
(Matthew 7:21-29)
"If you love Me, keep my commandments."
(John 14:15)
"He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me."
(John 14:21)
"If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me."
(John 14:23-24)
"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you."
(John 15:7)
"If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love."
(John 15:10)
"You are My friends if you do whatever I command you."
(John 15:14)
"He who says, 'I know Him,' and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him."
(I John 2:4)
ALL NATIONS WILL SUBMIT TO CHRIST IN THE WORLD TOMORROW
Psalm 2; Isaiah 2:3-4, 10-21; 9:6-7; 11:4; Daniel 2:44; 7:13-14, 18, 22, 27; Zechariah 14:9, 16-19; Luke 1:31-33; Romans 15:8-12, 18; I Corinthians 15:24; II Thessalonians 1:7-10; Hebrews 2:5; Revelation 2:26-27; 6:15-17; 11:15; 19:15
JESUS WAS A MESSENGER SENT FROM GOD
"And the Lord, whom you seek,
Will suddenly come to His temple,
Even the Messenger of the covenant,
In whom you delight."
(Malachi 3:1)
"Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, 'The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.' "
(Mark 1:14-15)
"The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ -- He is Lord of all -- that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached. . . ."
(Acts 10:36-37)
The verses quoted above define with whom the Gospel originated (the Father), by whom it was sent (Jesus Christ), where and when it began to be preached (in Galilee, after John's ministry), and to whom it was first sent (to Israel). Paul preached to the Gentiles the same, identical Gospel which Jesus, Peter, James and John preached to Israel -- for there is only one true Gospel (Galatians 1:6-9; 2:7-9). The Apostles Upheld the Law of God
"The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it. And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one tittle of the law to fail."
(Luke 16:16-17)
"Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught. And the Jews marveled, saying, 'How does this Man know letters, having never studied?'
"Jesus answered them and said, 'My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent me. If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority'. . . .
"Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, 'You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.' "
(John 7:14-17, 28-29)
GOD HAS SPOKEN TO MANKIND THROUGH CHRIST
"God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds. . . ."
(Hebrews 1:1-2)
"And the Lord said to me" [to Moses]. . . . " 'I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.' "
(Deuteronomy 18:17-19)
"That Prophet" was Jesus Christ (Acts 3:22-23; 7:37, 52-60; John 1:21; 7:40-42; Matthew 2:1-23).
"The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here."
(Matthew 12:42)
"This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!"
(Matthew 17:5; Mark 9:7; see also II Peter 1:17)
"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away."
(Matthew 24:35)
" . . . teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
(Matthew 28:20)
"For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."
(Mark 8:38)
"But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We will not have this man to reign over us'. . . .
"And he said to those who stood by. . . . 'bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.' "
(Luke 19:14, 24-27)
" . . . He who sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard from Him. . . . as my Father taught Me, I speak these things. . . .
"If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. . . .
" . . . you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father. . . . But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. . . .
"Why do you not understand my speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil. . . . He . . . does not stand in the truth. . . . he is a liar and the father of it. But because I tell you the truth, you do not believe Me. . . . He who is of God hears God's words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God. . . .
"Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death."
(John 8:26-28, 31, 37-40, 43-47, 51)
"He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him -- the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak."
(John 12:48-50)
From the Amplified Bible, Classic Edition:
"I was [ready to be] inquired of by those who asked not; I was [ready to be] found by those who sought Me not. I said, Here I am, here I am [says I AM] to a nation [Israel] that has not called on My name. [Exod. 3:14; Isa. 58:9]
"I have spread out My hands all the day long to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, after their own thoughts. . . ."
(Isaiah 65:1-2; see also Romans 10:20-21)
God sent a "threefold witness" to mankind through 1) John the baptist, 2) Jesus Christ and 3) the original apostles (I John 5:6-10). John the baptist's ministry was characterized by water baptism; Jesus Christ shed his blood for mankind on the cross; the apostles preached the Gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 2:3-4; Mark 16:20; Colossians 1:23). God expects mankind to heed that threefold witness!
Mainstream Christianity, however, has stepped off the foundation of the one true Church of God. A World in Confusion
Mainstream Christianity, however, has stepped off the foundation of the one true Church of God. A World in Confusion
A SURE FOUNDATION
The teachings of Jesus Christ are the bedrock foundation of the one true Church of God. Even if mainstream Christianity has stepped off of that foundation, the foundation itself remains intact.
"For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar."
(Romans 3:3-4)
"According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is."
(I Corinthians 3:10-13)
"If we deny Him,
He also will deny us.
If we are faithless,
He remains faithful;
He cannot deny Himself."
(II Timothy 2:12-13)
"See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying 'Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven.' Now this, 'Yet once more,' indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.
"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire."
(Hebrews 12:25-29)
God is about to "shake the heaven and the earth" (Isaiah 2:19, 21; 13:13; Joel 3:16; Haggai 2:6-7, 21-22; Matthew 24:21, 29; Revelation 6:12-17; 16:17-21). Everything that is not built on the foundation of The Word of God shall be removed! The Days of Trumpets and Atonement
REMEMBER THE WORDS OF JESUS
" . . . remember the words of the Lord Jesus. . . . "
(Acts 20:35)
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom. . . ."
(Colossians 3:16)
"If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ. . . . he is proud, knowing nothing. . . . From such withdraw yourself."
(I Timothy 6:3-5)
"This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all."
(I John 1:5)
"Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him. . . ."
(II John 9-10)
This section has affirmed that the teachings of Jesus Christ carry the weight of authority. God has spoken to the world through Christ. Jesus delivered the Message sent from God to mankind -- the Gospel of the Kingdom of God.
"The true gospel, when viewed with all that it embodies . . . becomes the most all-encompassing subject that can enter the mind of man. Beside it, everything else shrinks to total unimportance. It is greater than any story of man ever written before. . . .
"A full and complete understanding of the message sent by God to all mankind, by His Divine Messenger Jesus Christ, involves a vast comprehension of God’s great purpose, and of events prehistoric, historic, present and future.
"I might say it means an overall understanding of everything!"
-- From "The Incredible Human Potential" by Herbert W. Armstrong
Chapter II, “The Startling Revelation of What Was Christ’s Gospel"
One of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to cause the teachings of Christ to be remembered -- that they might be understood and followed (John 14:15-17, 21-26; 16:4, 13; I John 2:20, 27; I Corinthians 2:10-14). Christ's teachings are the bedrock foundation of the Church of God (Matthew 7:24-29; 28:20). Any man-made teachings and "traditions of men" which contradict the teachings of Jesus are of no value and are to be rejected (Matthew 15:9, 13-14).
In the next section we shall see that Christ upheld the Law of God.
